Content is the king. But how to write good copy that sells on your website?

There are tons of articles about copywriting, persuasive writing, landing page, SEO copywriting and so on. But for business users like yourselves, we understand that you might not have the time to know all those unless you want to.

In this article, we will give you the fastest ways and straight forward tips to write good copy for your website.

1. Target Audience

Always start to think who are you target customer. You can’t just sell your products or services to anyone. Be as specific as possible but not broad because you might not want to waste your effort knocking everyone’s door and end up nobody is going to buy from you.

You can ask the question below:-

-         What are their age groups, sex, industry, regional, occupation, etc?
-         What are the problems they try to solve or objectives to achieve by using your products or services?

2. Unique Selling Proposition

Having to understand who your target customers are, start to think what is so unique about your website to them. Why do they want to buy from you? How do you differentiate yourselves from your competitors? What makes you win?

Always remember that when people find you on search engines, they are going to click to visit other similar websites from search results which are likely to be your competitors. If you can’t give them a reason that you are better choice to consider, you can hardly standout.

Your USP should be short and sweet, strike people’s mind and this is what people will always remember you. In marketing terms, it is your differentiation strategy.

Place your USP loud and clear on top of your website, or the Home page.

3. Use of Home Page

Home page should be an overview of your business. Let people understand what you do at the first place. It is just like a 15 second sales script that tells people what you are selling.

Modern websites no longer start with “Welcome to…” paragraph because people no longer interest in reading such content. They might want to see what are your best deals and what is in it for them to read on. If you are not able to get them interested in the first few seconds, they are likely to bail out.

If you are running an e-commerce store, put your promotional campaign banner and featured products on the Home page.

4. Use Benefits vs Features

Benefits sell, features tell.

When you are writing about your products or services, focus on the benefits first before explaining the features. Most people buy on benefits as compare to lower percentage that will go for features in detail.

Write your benefits clearly using list instead of putting them in paragraph. Highlight important keywords to get more attention.

5. Testimonials

Use lots of customer testimonials to create trust for first time buyers. If possible, include your customer contact information or at least their websites’ URLs to show that you do not cheat on the testimonials.

If you have the time and budget, try to use video testimonials as they are popular and even more effective nowadays.

6. Headlines and Subtitles

People don’t read every word you write. They will scan through your page from top to bottom, left to right. Therefore, attractive headlines are so important to catch the attention and give people the idea what the page is about.

You should also divide your content into sub sections with clear sub titles. People will give up reading if the content is seem to be too long without giving them a break.

7. Images, Videos and Links

Images give better illustration as compare to text but don’t overuse them as your page will load slower. Although videos are cool, interactive and effective in a certain way, there’s a trade off in the speed for slow Internet connection.

Use links only when it’s necessary to link to other useful information. If not, you will end up having your potential customers click away from your site.

8. Company and Contact Information

Your best deal must be at your Home page, then your products and your store. But never miss out the important information about your company and contact.

Do not just put up a contact form, but physical company name, address, phone number, email address and contact person name for people to reach you. Try to include what are the working hours with your time zone so that people know when to call you.

In summary

Although you are not a professional writer, you should be able to write good content that best describe your business. Or, you can draft all the content you need for your website and then send to copywriters for proof reading.

Don’t forget to perform keyword research to create compelling website content structure that will wow your visitors as well as good for search engine optimization.
